Young People
The Jazz Age was a time when young people started to rebel against common social norms. The most rebellious of this new generation were young women who became known as flappers. Flappers created a new look for women that included short hair and short clothes that exposed their legs. A common social norm during the 1920s for women was to always have a man look after them, but flappers refused to have a man look after them. Flappers also went to all night parties, drove cars, smoked in public and held men's hands without wearing gloves. Also, sitting on flagpoles was a popular way to rebel against social norms and both genders did this.

Prohibition
In 1920, the 18th amendment to the U.S. constitution went into effect which basically prohibited the manufacture, transportation and sale of alcoholic beverages. This created a huge market for alcohol and bootleggers which gave way to powerful gangsters such as Al Capone. Although alcohol was outlawed, many people in the Jazz Age still continued to find ways to get their hands on some alcohol and have a good time, usually at speakeasies.
